  • Scott Derrickson exited as director of "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" in January
  • The movie sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong
  • It is slated to release in 2022

"Doctor Strange 2's" former director Scott Derrickson may have finally revealed the real reason for his exit from the Marvel franchise.

"Doctor Strange," starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, is the 14th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It follows the adventures of Stephen Strange and his role in the world of Avengers. "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is the sequel to the 2016 movie and the 28th film of the MCU.

Derrickson originally had plans to co-write and helm the second part of Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong starter movie. His return, along with the original cast members, was announced in December 2018. However, the director decided to step back from the project in January 2020. While the details of Derrickson's exit were not specified, it was reportedly due to some creative differences.

On Tuesday, Derrickson took to Twitter to reveal why he chose to walk out of some big projects. He said he was sticking to some lessons he learned during his time on "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

"I've made some hard creative choices this year. But I swore after making The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) that I would never again find myself at the end of somebody else's movie, and I'm sticking to that," Derrickson wrote on Twitter.

Comicbook said the 54-year-old filmmaker may be "hinting at why he left the sequel" of "Doctor Strange."

"Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' due to creative differences," Marvel told Variety at the time. "We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU."

Derrickson agreed that this was a mutual decision.

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" will see the return of Cumberbatch, Wong and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Karl Mordo), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Xochitl Gomez (America Chavez). The movie picks up after the events of "Avengers: Endgame," whereby Stephen Strange is researching on Time Stone when a new villain and unspeakable evils obstruct him.

The movie is scheduled to release on March 25, 2022.
