A 2-year-old child was attacked by a dog at the Guilford County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on Wednesday. According to a news release from the shelter, the child was with his family for evaluation of a husky mix for a possible adoption when the dog bit the infant.

Authorities told local media that the extent of the child's injury remains unknown. As per the Guilford County animal bite protocols, the dog was moved into isolation for a review. Shelter staff confirmed the dog had all of its vaccinations.

The shelter's management said an investigation was underway into the incident to verify if all handling procedures were followed.

"We are committed to making every adoption of every animal a positive, permanent experience for both the animals and the pet owner. We also conduct community awareness programs such as education on pet care and responsibility, as well as pet therapy at senior residence homes," the shelter wrote about its duties on its website.

In a similar incident earlier this month, a dog mauled a child and the mother at a pet adoption service in Jacksonville, Florida. The two victims were at the Animal Care and Protective Services building in the Mixon Town neighborhood when the attack took place. Local media reported at the time that the child's injuries appeared to be serious but not life-threatening. The 7-year-old was viciously bitten on the thigh. The extent of the injuries of the mother was not revealed. The breed of the dog was also not known. Authorities released a statement saying the dog was quarantined.
