A pet dog was beaten to death after it allegedly bit a man and tried to attack his daughter. Police have arrested two men for cruelty against animals. The incident took place in Mumbai, a city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

The stray dog, which was being taken care of by the local people, was beaten to death by the man who allegedly claimed that the dog attacked him and his minor daughter. A case was filed against the man, Hitesh Rathod, on Friday by a woman who was looking after the dog as she suspected them of the crime.

The woman, Seema Thakur, said, “Though it was a stray dog, I got it vaccinated regularly and sterilized. As it had a collar, it indicated that it was a pet. It should not have been harmed.”

But the police also registered a complaint against the woman, as the man said the dog had bitten him and attempted to harm his minor daughter. The authorities reported that an investigation was under way.

The incident happened about a month after four unidentified suspects were charged with animal cruelty for brutally killing 12 puppies -- also in Maharashtra. The puppies were being looked after by the local kids who had built them a makeshift shelter. The kids found the carcasses of the puppies one morning when they went to feed them and informed their parents who contacted animal rights activists.

As per reports, the injuries indicated that the puppies were dropped from a height and subjected to torture before being killed. The police checked the CCTV footage of the area as part of the investigation which showed the four men carrying the puppies away. The officers said an investigation was in progress and that they were attempting to identify the suspects based on the security camera footage.
