While Democratic nominee Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump in the latest polls, views on the economy could help the incumbent win November’s general election.

Trump is more trusted than Biden when it comes to the economy by Americans in swing states, according to NBC News. Biden has the edge on issues such as the coronavirus, health care and crime.

“I do think there's work to do here in connecting the dots,” said Hari Sevugan, who worked for Pete Buttigieg's 2020 campaign and for Barack Obama in 2008. “We need to do a better job of showing that a failure to deal with the pandemic was a failure to look out for the economy.”

Half of Americans approve the way Trump has handled the economy, compared to 46.5% who disapprove, the RealClearPolitics average indicates. Trump has a 3.5-point approval rating on the economy despite a 15-point disapproval rating on the way he’s handled the coronavirus.

“You have a situation where we built the greatest economy in the history of the world. We were forced to close it because of the China plague that came in," Trump said Tuesday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. “Next year is going to be one of the greatest years in the history of a country economically, unless the wrong person gets in.”

Trump also has an edge in states where he needs it the most.

A poll by Marquette law school indicates Trump has an eight-point net approval rating on the economy in the swing state of Wisconsin. On the question of which candidate is better on the economy, Trump leads Biden 13 points in Florida and 10 points in Pennsylvania, according to a couple of NBC/Marist surveys.

The latest FiveThirtyEight projection gives Trump a 25% chance to win the 2020 presidential election.
