KEY POINTS

  • Ed Sheeran posted a clip of the acapella version of "Afterglow"
  • The singer-songwriter recently released "Bad Habits"
  • "Permission to Dance," which he co-wrote, dominated Billboard Hot 100 last week

It looks like Ed Sheeran's fans are in for a treat. The bestselling artist posted a short video clip on Instagram Tuesday to tease a new project.

"Was recording something special today," the 30-year-old English singer-songwriter wrote in the caption.

In the video, Sheeran can be seen wearing a black T-shirt and jeans. Behind him is a semicircle of backup singers who are also clad in all-black outfits. Together, they sing a hauntingly beautiful acapella of Sheeran's 2020 song "Afterglow."

The Instagram post has been viewed at least 2.5 million times by fans who couldn't contain their excitement for Sheeran's new project.

"I can see why you chose that space. The acoustics are awesome. Love a capella music!" one fan commented.

"That sounds amazing!!" another one said.

Unfortunately, Sheeran did not provide any other information on his new project.

It is worth noting, however, that the video teaser comes shortly after the release of his new single, "Bad Habits." The track is currently occupying the No. 1 spot on Billboard's Global 200 and is on its third week on the summit of the Global Excl. U.S. charts, reported Billboard.

"Bad Habits. One month at number one. Thank you all for listening and supporting Ed's new single," the artist's official Twitter handle shared on July 24.

According to ABC News, "Bad Habits" is the lead single of Sheeran's upcoming fifth studio album whose title and release date are yet to be announced.

In a previous Instagram post, the "Shape of You" singer told his fans how much he had enjoyed writing "Bad Habits." He even described it as "a fun tune to make."

"Wrote bad habits in January with @fredagainagainagainagainagain and @jmd_snowpatrol. We rented an old country house with the idea that the change of scenery from a studio would help make the most interesting songs, and for a month just chucked around random ideas and genres that I wouldn't ever usually make," Sheeran recalled. "'Bad habits' came by accident and was such a fun tune to make. I didn't know at the time it would end up as the first single from the album but here we are. Check the video out on YouTube, and hope you enjoy it."

Also this month, Sheeran celebrated his fourth Billboard No. 1 hit as a songwriter after the BTS' latest single, "Permission to Dance," which he co-wrote with Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac and Jenna Andrews, made it to the top of Billboard Hot 100. On Monday, the song dropped to No.7 as it gave way to "Butter," another BTS hit.
