  • Donald Trump has a small lead over Joe Biden in North Carolina: ECU poll results
  • Results from the survey showed 49% of likely voters want Trump re-elected
  • Trump gained points in Pennsylvania, Florida after Republican Party's National Convention

President Donald Trump enjoys a small lead over his election 2020 rival and former Vice President Joe Biden in North Carolina, with a recent poll showing 49% of respondents intend to re-elect him against 47% who plan to vote for the Democratic nominee.

East Carolina University (ECU) released the results of the poll Tuesday. It was conducted over the weekend following the Republican Party’s National Convention Aug. 29-30. Of those who said they intend to vote for either Trump or Biden, 96% said they have already made up their minds. Only 4% said they might reconsider. The poll shows the tight competition in North Carolina, where Trump won by a 3.67% margin in 2016.

The ECU poll indicated a high level of excitement about voting for the country’s next president in the Tar Heel State, where the competition remains tight.

The poll also showed Republican Senator Thom Tillis tied with Democrat Cal Cunningham at 44%, and Democrat Roy Cooper with a 50%-40% lead over Republican challenger Dan Forest in the race for governor.

Republican Mark Robinson holds a narrow lead over Democrat Yvonne Lewis Holley at 43% to 40% in the election for Lieutenant Governor.

Dr. Peter Francia, the director of the Center for Survey Research, said, voter turnout would determine the outcome of the upcoming presidential election in North Carolina. While campaign efforts are unlikely to make a significant difference, the November presidential race result would depend on which party can turn out more supporters to cast votes.

A poll released by Morning Consult Tuesday showed little changed in the race between Trump and Biden in crucial battleground states Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio, and Texas. But the Democratic presidential nominee took the lead in Arizona and Georgia. Trump gained two points in Pennsylvania and three in Florida.

Nationally, Biden leads Trump 51%-43%. Biden’s lead surpassed Hillary Clinton’s, who had a 3-point advantage in a survey conducted after the 2016 national convention, USA Today reported.
