KEY POINTS

  • Mia Khalifa wants to learn the right pronunciation of Benedict Cumberbatch's name because the actor promotes equal pay for his female co-stars
  • A professor said Khalifa is a feminist and joining the porn industry was her assertion of control over her sexuality
  • The ex-porn star has been banned from going to Lebanon, but she has always showed love for her home country

Mia Khalifa was impressed with fellow feminist Benedict Cumberbatch's statement about equal payment for his female co-stars that she committed to learning the right pronunciation of his name.

In an Instagram Story, Khalifa shared a post from the_female-lead featuring the "Doctor Strange' star with a headline that read, "Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Won't Take On A Role Unless His Female Co-Stars Are Paid The Same."

"I will commit to learning how to pronounce his name after this!" Khalifa wrote.

The "Sherlock" star made the statement in an interview with Radio Times in 2018. The actor has long spoken about his support for feminism.

“Look at your quotas. Ask what women are being paid, and say: ‘If she’s not paid the same as the men, I’m not doing it,’” Cumberbatch said.

The actor was keen to apply the same practice to his new production company, SunnyMarch. In fact, he is focused on women-centric stories because he believes that it’s the right thing to do and it’s good for business.

"I’m proud that [business partner] Adam [Ackland] and I are the only men in our production company. Our next project is a female story with a female lens about motherhood, in a time of environmental disaster. If it’s centered around my name, to get investors, then we can use that attention for a raft of female projects," he continued.

"Equal pay and a place at the table are the central tenets of feminism.”

Fida Afiouni, a professor at the Olayan School of Business at the American University of Beirut whose research focuses on gender in the Arab Middle East, also identified Khalifa as a feminist.

"Mia is definitely a feminist," Afiouni said.

"She willingly chose her occupation.... Being a porno star is her own feminist expression and a means of asserting control over her sexuality. I believe that it is this assertion of control over her sexuality that is driving people crazy in Lebanon, as this is a blatant defiance to the predominant patriarchal structures.”

Khalifa has been banned from Lebanon for doing porn. However, she has always showed love for her home country even if she feels that it doesn’t love her back. In fact, Khalifa has been doing her part to help the Lebanese people after the massive explosion in Beirut on Tuesday.
