Joe Russo, the co-director of “Avengers: Endgame,” has inked a deal with streaming giant Netflix to pen a sequel to the highly successful action flick “Extraction.”

The first movie was written and co-produced by Joe. He served as producer for the movie along with his brother Anthony. The feature film was helmed by Sam Hargrave and it is yet to be seen if Hargrave is returning to don the director’s hat once again.

Talking about the much-awaited sequel, Joe told Deadline that he does not know where Tyler Rake’s story goes from here and cannot commit if people would be seeing the story go forward or backward in time.

“The deal is closed for me to write ‘Extraction 2,’ and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We are not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience,” Joe said.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The first film saw Chris Hemsworth’s character (Tyler) attempting to save the life of a 14-year-old boy named Ovi Mahajan Jr., who has been kidnapped by a drug lord and taken to Bangladesh. Tyler went to Bangladesh to bring the child back to India. But in the end, he was hit by a bullet on the backside of his neck and fell into the river.

When Ovi safely reached back home, he went for a swim and took a dive into their pool. But as he rose up, viewers saw a blurry image of a person standing at a distance and closely watching the kid. Because of this, a lot of viewers believe that Hemsworth’s character was alive at the end of the film.

The news of the sequel comes a day after the “Thor: Ragnarok” star thanked his fans for making “Extraction” the number one movie in the world. The actor shared a video onlineand briefly addressed the reports of a sequel to the movie. The actor did not give anything away but made it clear that he would be pretty stoked to play Tyler once again.

On the other hand, Joe believes that Hargrave should return to helm the sequel, too. The “Infinity War” director also shared that Hemsworth will be offered the movie once the script is done.

The first film featured Rudraksh Jaiswal, Golshifteh Farahani, Randeep Hooda, and Pankaj Tripathi in pivotal roles. The main antagonist in the movie was portrayed by Priyanshu Painyuli.

The movie garnered positive reviews from the critics as well as the audiences. The film currently holds a score of 67% on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
