  • Square Enix has announced the latest major update to "Final Fantasy VII Remake"
  • The new update adds an emphasis to fan-favorite character Yuffie
  • The new content arrives June this year

“Final Fantasy VII” fans who loved the remake will be very glad to know that Square Enix is releasing a new episode that stars a fan-favorite character from the PS1 classic.

The new episode, “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade,” lets fans play as Yuffie, the self-described “materia hunter and elite special forces operative” from Wutai. She first made her appearance in the 1997 original and is now making her entrance to the game that’s remade for today’s technology.

Unlike in the original where Yuffie is just one of the characters that players can include in their preferred party at any time, the “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade” episode puts the spotlight on her and makes her the main character. She is joined by another character named Sonon in her mission to “prove to our common enemy that Wutai is not to be trifled with.”

The trailer for the new episode, shown during Sony’s latest State of Play, indicates that the chapter that features Yuffie is found smack dab in the middle of the main story – right after Cloud falls and gets separated from Avalanche members Tifa Lockhart and Barret Wallace.

Yuffie has a new set of outer clothing for the game. She starts out wearing some sort of cloak that covers only the upper half of her body. The cloak has a hood that looks like a Moogle – the perfect design for a young and perky character like her.

The young shuriken-wielder still wears the familiar costume she had in the original game underneath the hooded cloak. She still wears the same green cropped clothing that exposes her midriff, the steel shoulder armor attached to a thick sleeve worn on her left arm, short shorts and thick knee-length socks covering the upper parts of her boots. All of these are similar to the classic design.

The trailer shows that Yuffie has both melee and ranged attacks. She also has some interesting attacks partnered with Sonon. The scenes shown indicate that players will need to play as the two characters for most, if not all, of the time during the chapter.

Players will face new enemies and bosses, travel new locations and see new characters not featured in the original 1997 title. One of these is Weiss the Immaculate. He was introduced in the “FFVII” spin-off title “Dirge of Cerberus,” which starred the awesome Vincent Valentine, who doesn’t seem to be part of the new episode. He might arrive in another one in the future.

Yuffie and the aforementioned details aren’t the only things included in the new episode. The new update also includes visual optimizations and a new Photo Mode. Those who pre-order will also get Yuffie’s weapon, “Cacstar,” and be able to use it for the new chapter.

What’s more, those who own the game for the PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free. They can also carry saved game data and continue where they left off on the older console. The content featuring Yuffie, however, is sold separately.

Square Enix said “Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade” will be available for the PlayStation 5 on June 10 this year.
