Jaime and Cersei on "Game of Thrones"
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau may have revealed that Cersei (Lena Headey) could die in Season 7 of “Game of Thrones,” but if that’s what happens, Jaime may not be the one to do it. HBO

With Winter officially here and the Great War looming ever closer over the Seven Kingdoms, things are definitely set to change on Season 7 of “Game of Thrones.” And one of those things may once again be who occupies the Iron Throne, as it seems more and more likely that Mad Queen Cersei Lannister will meet her death.

In a new interview with Time, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who portrays Cersei’s (Lena Headey) on-screen brother/lover on the hit series, may have dropped a new hint that the Mad Queen will meet her death in the new season. When asked about whether or not he flipped through scripts when he got them to learn his fate, the actor revealed that he and Headey assume they’ll die every year, and are genuinely surprised when they survive another season.

“… We’re all going to die eventually, We’ll see what happens in Season 7, but now that you’re this close... I remember speaking to Lena about this every season, we would be surprised if we survived another year, and then another year went by,” he said. “It would be, ‘Well next year is the one, because there’s no way they’re going to keep us around,’ and then they did, and then last season, it was the thing where we said, ‘Oh God, I hope we get to do one more season, because I’m just so curious to see what happens.’”

Though his comments aren’t exact confirmations that Jaime or Cersei, or even both, will die before Season 7 ends, when taken with his other comments about the possibility that Cersei will die, they do seem to be more like a confirmation that it will happen.

Cersei’s death is a big point of debate when it comes to Thronies, and many believe her death will come in the new season, after the prophecy made by Maggy the Frog (Jodhi May) back in Season 5. On the show, Maggy predicted that Cersei would marry Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), and correctly stated how many children they would each have, telling Cersei all three of her children would also die—something that has since happened on the show.

In the books by George R.R. Martin, the predictions went one step further, with Maggy suggesting that Cersei would be killed by a Valonqar, or little brother in High Valyrian. There have been endless possibilities theorized about who the “little brother” in question would be, and Jaime has been teased as being the person who would kill her, after turning on her when she became too power hungry.

When asked about that theory in an interview with The Daily Beast, he simply said it was a “great theory,” without revealing any other details.

However, he may have now revealed that while Cersei could die, he won’t be the one who commits the act, saying that the relationship between the siblings has been lifelong, and it would be impossible for Jaime to walk away now, even if he does disapprove of how Cersei has climbed to power.

“They’ve been together their whole lives. This is truly a 30-year romance that you can’t just walk away from,” he said. “It’s not like you go, ‘Oh, my God, this is it, you’ve crossed the line.’”

To find out if Cersei will die, fans will need to tune in to Season 7 episodes of “Game of Thrones” on Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO, starting July 16.
