Apple released an update to its GarageBand recording studio software with a new feature that can create custom ringtones for the iPhone.

GarageBand '08 version 4.1.1, released on Thursday, can be used to convert certain segments of songs into a format that can be exported to the iPhone. The tone has a time limit of 40 seconds.

While users can currently purchase ringtones for the iPhone, the software would allow users to create an unlimited number free ringtones.

The latest version of GarageBand recording studio is available for free only for Macintosh on apple.com
