“Girls” star, director, writer and producer, Lena Dunham, recently slammed critics who claimed that the characters in the original HBO TV series are unlikeable.

While speaking with Vogue, Dunham said that she doesn’t really understand why some people label Hannah (Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) as unlikeable. “I’m constantly being asked about these characters being unlikeable, and I’m like, ‘What does that even mean?’ Walter White and Tony Soprano literally murder people, and everybody’s like, ‘I love them,’ and all we do is kind of rude and do drugs sometimes and we’re unlikeable,” she said.

Amy Schumer, who originally auditioned for the role of Shoshanna, acknowledged the fact that some viewers may not relate to the characters in “Girls.” However, there are also those who are tired of watching very typical or repetitive stories on television that are glued to the show. Unfortunately, “Girls” is about to release its sixth and final season starting February.

Meanwhile, despite the series wrapping up very soon, Dunham is still very proud that “Girls” made it to television for six seasons. “When I had my first meeting with HBO and they said, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘I don’t see anyone who’s like me or anyone I love on television. And now – I’m not saying we started it – but between Amy Schumer, ‘Broad City’ and Mindy Kaling – that has changed,” she said.

“Girls” executive producer Judd Apatow seconded Dunham’s thoughts by saying that the actress changed the landscape of television. “There was really no precedent for that level of honesty and boldness,” she said.

In other news, “Girls” Season 6 is expected to have a total of 10 episodes just like in Seasons 1 to 5. The series will premiere on HBO on Feb. 12 at 10 p.m. EST.
