“Gotham” star Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Penguin on the hit Fox series, is speaking out after a sweet anniversary message resulted in hateful responses.

On Saturday morning Taylor, took to Instagram and Twitter to share that June 18 marks his five-year wedding anniversary. “I married the greatest man I’ve ever met,” he captioned a photo of their hands entwined. “We are proud and unafraid. #LoveIsLove.”

While many took to the 38-year-old’s social media account to wish him and his husband a happy anniversary, others used the post to spread hateful messages. Taylor decided to fire back with another post, stating “homophobia is real and deadly.”

The actor’s tweets come a week after the Orlando shooting that left 49 people dead at Pulse, a gay club. Following the shooting, Taylor took to his page to share that he is “consistently horrified by what happens.”

“I feel helpless and sad,” he wrote.

Despite Taylor using his wedding anniversary to take a stand, he generally keeps his personal life out of the public eye.

“I am married!” he told Glamour in 2014. “I like to keep it private, but I’ve been married for over three years, and we’ve been together for 10 ½. No kids. Kids yet!”
