The Season 11 finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” left a lot of viewers heartbroken after Thursday night’s installment revealed that a beloved couple from the hit ABC series was on the brink of a breakup. Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) faced a huge obstacle in their relationship during “You’re My Home” after the trauma surgeon revealed she was itching to return to the army.

Initially, Jackson gave April his blessing to take the next flight out of Seattle to Jordan. He added that when their son tragically died, he saw a light go out in his wife. And luckily the army was able to reignite that fire in April -- the fire he loved. However, Jackson added that he wouldn’t be waiting around for his wife this time when she returned from her second overseas adventure.

“You got to have your life-altering journey, and I stayed behind. I silenced myself so you could grieve. I needed to [grieve] with you. That’s what marriage is to me, April,” he said, giving his wife an ultimatum: him or the army.

“If I go, then we’re done? You’re calling it?” she responded after being left with an impossible decision to make.

So, is Japril officially over? Although the fate of their relationship seemed pretty grim by the time the finale concluded, Sarah Drew promised fans not to lose all hope -- at least, not yet!

“We haven’t actually broken up. We’re left on the precipice. He’s given me an ultimatum that gives us room to figure out what’s going to happen next season,” she told Entertainment Weekly, adding that she doesn’t see what happened to Japril as a breakup. “I see it as they’re definitely in a really, really rough situation. I don’t think that it’s the nail on the coffin for them. He says if you go, we’re done, but April still has to make a choice, so that’s where -- I guess -- we’ll pick up next season, but [showrunner Shonda Rhimes] could make a different choice.

Although Drew said that Season 12 will be an uphill battle for the twosome as they “try to find their way back to one another,” the actress was optimistic that Japril will continue to thrive as a couple.

“I really, really hope that they do. It was very sad shooting that scene. I want them to survive. I want them to find solace in each other. I want them to be able to heal with each other. We’ll see where the show takes us in Season 12,” she told Entertainment Weekly, revealing that the writers are currently tossing around a lot of different “ideas and scenarios” for Japril.

Drew also teased a possible Season 12 story line, revealing that if April does decide give up the adrenaline-inducing gig for her family then she could end up resenting her husband “and the relationship could backfire.”

“It’s a tough situation,” she stated. “This is what makes Shondaland shows so great. People are faced with impossible situations and somehow they find someway to make it through them, cope and survive and eventually thrive. I’m not hopeless in the Japril scenario.”
