Ultra-famous singer and songwriter Madonna will be celebrating her 57th birthday Sunday, topping off a year that has been anything but boring for the talented celebrity. In the past year, she's done quite a bit: She released her 13th studio album, "Rebel Heart," and she was caught mackin' on one of hip-hop's hottest artists, Drake. Oh, and she may have taken a fall onstage, too.

Madonna is known for breaking norms as an artist. When she first got famous, she challenged the bounds of pop culture image and music. She's managed to stay in the public eye for quite some time now. From her first big club hits in the early '80s, to the release of "Like A Virgin" in 1984, to today, Madonna has grown to be a well-known figure in the pop culture universe.

Along the way she's taken a few twists and turns. She was named the wealthiest female musician in the world in 2008, and while she made her mark on the music industry as a shocking and out-of-the-box performer who wasn't afraid to take things to the next level, she also has four children back at home. She's also been married and divorced twice: once with movie star Sean Penn and once with filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

To help celebrate her birthday, here are some photos of this last year and quotes from the pop icon.

No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you've come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself.

I laugh at myself. I don't take myself completely seriously. I think that's another quality that people have to hold on to... you have to laugh, especially at yourself.

A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That's why they don't get what they want.
