After decades of development and waiting, Tom Cruise will finally step into the cockpit once more for the sequel to his 1986 smash-hit Air Force thriller, “Top Gun: Maverick.” While the film won’t hit theaters until June 2020, we now have a rumor about when we can expect the first glimpse at the ambitious sequel.

As reported by Deadline, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media are said to be planning to have some sort of presence for the film at San Diego Comic-Con, one of the biggest American entertainment conventions of the year, next month. Deadline notes that several members of the “Top Gun: Maverick” cast have been booking hotels in San Diego recently, though it could not be confirmed if Cruise would be among them.

Should this result in a presentation of some sort at the convention, it isn’t uncommon for the footage shown to attendees to also be released to the public.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will once again find Cruise playing ace Air Force pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Plot details are unknown, but casting details may have revealed that the story will focus on Maverick interacting with a new generation of pilots. The rest of the cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, and Val Kilmer, reprising his role of “Iceman” from the original film.

The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (“TRON: Legacy”), who is said to going above and beyond for the film’s technical elements.

“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen,” Hamm said about the production. “We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So, it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing. And it’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

The first “Top Gun” was directed by Tony Scott (“Man on Fire”) and grossed $356 million worldwide. It was the first action film Cruise ever starred in and is widely considered the release that made him a movie star.

Paramount Pictures will release “Top Gun: Maverick” on June 26, 2020.
