Set years earlier in the same universe of George R.R. Martin's fantasy books, "House of the Dragon" depicts the glory days of the ancestors of popular "Thrones" characters

KEY POINTS

  • "House of the Dragon" episode 10, titled "The Black Queen," will air on HBO Sunday
  • The fantasy-action series was renewed for a second season in August
  • Filming for Season 2 will start in 2023

"House of the Dragon" Season 1 is coming to an end this week.

"The Black Queen," the 10th episode and season finale of "House of the Dragon," will air Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT, according to Winteriscoming.net. It will be released on HBO and HBO Max simultaneously.

The "Game of Thrones" prequel series was renewed for a second season on HBO not long after the show's record-breaking premiere on Aug. 21.

"We are beyond proud of what the entire 'House of the Dragon' team has accomplished with season one," Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a statement obtained by Deadline. "Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn't be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with Season 2."

But fans will likely have to wait a while for the release of the next installment.

"House of the Dragon" is expected to begin filming its second season next year. Season 2 may not come until 2024, given the filming schedule and the length of the post-production process.

The penultimate ninth episode, "The Green Council," had a revolting and action-packed ending that may have made fans more curious about how the season would possibly end. It focused on the Hightowers' scheme to replace Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) as heir to the Iron Throne.

Upon the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) sought the counsel of her father Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifan) and mistakenly reported that Viserys' last wish was for their firstborn son, Prince Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), to ascend the throne after his death, according to Harper's Bazaar.

Alicient and Otto then called for an emergency meeting of the small council to deliver the news of Viserys' death and his alleged last wish. To Alicent's surprise, some of the council members did not contend as they have been secretly conspiring for Aegon's ascension to the throne.

Meanwhile, the news angered Master of Coin Lyman Beesbury (Bill Paterson), who argued against Aegon being named heir by Viserys as the king had always defended and propped up his daughter Princess Rhaneyra while he was still alive.

Due to Lyman's opposition, he was killed by Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel).

"House of the Dragon" is set about 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones" and focuses on the reign of the Targaryen dynasty and the tragedy that led to their downfall.

The star-studded cast also includes Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Ewan Mitchell, Phia Saban and Harry Collett, among many others.

The first episode of "House of the Dragon" reached 9.986 million viewers across linear and HBO Max platforms, which is the largest audience of any new original series in the history of HBO, according to the network.
