"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2014 movie "Maleficent." And while fans may be lining up to get their tickets, they are also probably trying to remember where the story left off. After all, it's been over five years since the first film was released. So, without further ado, here's a recap of "Maleficent."

First things first, remember there are two kingdoms: a human kingdom and magical forest realm bordering the kingdom known as the Moors.

Viewers were first introduced to Maleficent, a fairy, as a child who falls in love with Stefan, a human peasant boy. The two form a friendship and, later, a romance, but eventually, drift apart.

All grown up, Maleficent defends the Moors from being conquered by King Henry, which causes him to put out a hit on her. He promises that whoever kills her can marry his daughter and become the successor to the throne. That's when Stefan seeks out Maleficent, coming to her as an old friend and betrays her by drugging her. Unable to go through with killing her, he clips her wings and presents them to the king.

Some time passes, and Maleficient is informed that Stefan is hosting a christening for his daughter, Aurora. Out of revenge, Maleficent shows up uninvited and puts a curse on Aurora -- on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep from which can only be broken by true loves kiss.

In fear for his daughter, Stefan sends Aurora to live with three fairies, but Maleficent actually ends up caring for the child. The two develop a bond so tight that Maleficent tries to undo the curse but is unsuccessful. The day before her 16th birthday, the fairies inadvertently reveal the truth about what happened and Aurora returns to her father's castle.

Stefan locks Aurora in her room for safety but she still ends up pricking herself and falling into a deep sleep. Maleficent, in an attempt to save Aurora, brings Phillip, a prince Aurora had previously met, to kiss her, but nothing happens. It's when Maleficent kisses Aurora's forehead that she awakens.

Maleficent is captured by Stefan and his guards when she attempts to leave with Aurora. Just before Stefan can follow through with killing her, Aurora finds Maleficent's wings and releases them. With her wings reattached, she flies herself and Stefan to the top of the highest tower but can't go through with killing him. As she turns, Stefan attacks, and the two begin to fall. Maleficent is saved by her wings as Stefan falls to his death.

In the end, Aurora is crowned Queen, which unifies the two kingdoms.

"Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" hits theatres Friday, Oct. 18.
