She might be the subject of criticism because of the way she reportedly spends money and the things she seems to favor, but a new report claims that Meghan Markle is actually helping to revolutionize the royal family.

According to E! News, the Duchess of Sussex might be facing criticism for the things she says, does and wears, but her different take on being more progressive with politics, as well as her former life as an actress, have helped her prove that she may be what the Royals need to not seem as staid an old-fashioned as they once did.

When it comes to her fashion, the website notes that the pricey wardrobe she had during her pregnancy was a very different step from tradition. According to Love the Sales, every ensemble the Duchess wore during the months before her maternity leave rang in at nearly $700,000, and overall, her wardrobe was seven times more expensive than her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton’s.

“Meghan has a well-established background before [marrying] Harry as a woman who enjoyed designer clothing,” Love the Sales’ fashion editor Liam Solomon previously told Marie Claire. “From walking red carpets to living a glamorous LA lifestyle, the former actress was already wearing brands like Dior and Givenchy. You could argue that her newfound fame in the royal family has only enhanced her style choices, which would obviously mean bigger budgets.”

“Quite the opposite environment Kate has grown up in, has meant she has stuck with more understated brands,” he added. “As Meghan was wearing Stella McCartney & Victoria Beckham during her pregnancy, Kate favored pregnancy brands like Seraphine, which were much more affordable.”

However revolutionary she may be though, Markle is still under fire for indulging in her expensive tastes—including her trip on a chartered private jet for her baby shower in New York City, her expensive babymoon with Prince Harry, and most recently, the money that was spent on the extensive renovations that took place at the home she and Prince Harry share at Frogmore Cottage. A recently released report from The Sovereign Grant and Sovereign Grant Reserves revealed that the reno cost roughly $3 million in taxpayer money, which hasn’t been sitting well with the public.

However, in a statement to the press, Sir Michael Stevens, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, revealed the property had already been earmarked for renovations and the work that was done with taxpayer money was all necessary improvements.

“The property had not been the subject of work for some years and had already been earmarked for renovation in line with our responsibility to maintain the condition of the occupied royal palaces estate,” he said. “The Sovereign Grant covered the work undertaken to turn the building into the official residence and home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their new family. The building was returned to a single residence and outdated infrastructure was replaced to guarantee the long-term future of the property.”

Among those necessary improvements were refurbishing five residential units that were in “poor condition,” which included replacing defective wooden ceiling beams and floor joists, updating heating systems, rewiring the electrical and installing new gas and water lines. However, any particular furnishings came from Harry and Meghan’s own private money.

Still, while Markle is being criticized for these moments, it may be something that the public will have to accept. Not only is she set on proving she intends to do things her own way, but she also isn't the only member of the royal family who costs the taxpayers a lot of money either.
