There’s a way to keep tweets containing certain words, phrases, emojis and hashtags off of your timeline and out of your mentions. Twitter’s new updates have been aimed at making the social media app a safer place, for users on Android devices and in web browsers that is. Currently users on iOS can only mute words from their notifications, but not their timeline.

Twitter and other social media platforms like Instagram have been rolling out safety features created with the help of user feedback. Twitter announced in February that it would be adjusting safety features to help curb abuse on the app.

The new safety feature for muted words is set at a default of forever, but users do have the option to put a time limit on the mute or to unmute words.

How To Mute Words, Phrases, Emojis On Twitter Desktop:

It’s a few simple steps to a less abusive Twitter experience.

If you’re using Twitter on the web in a browser, you can add certain words, phrases or emojis to your mute list by clicking on your profile image in the upper right hand corner of your browser page. Select “settings and privacy” from the drop down menu and then select “muted words” along the left sidebar. This will bring you to a page where you can add words or phrases and select where you want them muted and for how long. To unmute, go to this same page.

Mute Twitter On Android:

In the Android app select your notifications and then the gear symbol to find the option for “muted words.” Select the + icon there and add what you wish to mute as separate entries. You can also select the amount of time they’ll be muted and where they’ll be muted from here.

Mute Twitter On iPhone:

The process is the same as it is on Android, the difference is that on iOS devices you don’t have the option to also mute the content on your timeline, just in your notifications, for now.
