Prince William and Kate Middleton may have the picture perfect family but before the couple married, they went through a break up that took an emotional toll on the future Duchess of Cambridge.

William met Kate in 2001 at the University of St Andrew and the two began dating. However, by 2004, he felt they should take some time away from each other and go on a break. The decision completely devastated Kate and made her fear Will was falling for someone else.

In Katie Nicholl’s 2010 book “William and Harry,” the author claimed Prince William “wanted a break” from his relationship which “hurt Kate deeply.” What made matters even worse was Kate began to suspect William was falling for American heiress Anna Sloan.

“Anna had lost her father, businessman George Sloan, in a tragic shooting accident on the family’s 360-acre estate in Nashville, and she and William had bonded over the loss of their parents,” Nicholl’s stated.

Prince William lost his mother, Princess Diana when he was just a teenager and was heartbroken over her death. His blossoming friendship with Anna did little to ease Kate’s concerns about their “trial separation” becoming permanent.

“Kate was beginning to question William’s commitment to their relationship, and she also had her own creeping doubts about their future after St Andrews.”

Despite Kate’s suspicions, Nicholl’s claimed William never carried on a romantic relationship with Sloan. “Anna was not the least bit romantically interested in William, and the friendship was never anything more than just that.”

Years later, William married Kate and the two are now parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
