“Artemis Fowl” was supposed to head to theaters this summer, but Disney decided to go with a different plan. They are instead going to premiere the Eoin Colfer adaptation via streaming, and it’s a lot cheaper than tickets to the movie theater.

Fans can watch “Artemis Fowl” starting Friday, June 12, on Disney+. The brand-new movie comes at no extra cost to subscribers, who pay $5.99 or less per month for the service. Most other movies that were supposed to be in theaters have been offered as “premium rentals” at $19.99 per viewing, so it's a deal in comparison.

The movie follows 12-year-old Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw), the latest in a long line of criminal geniuses. When his father (Colin Farrell) gets kidnapped, Artemis is ready to save him. Unfortunately, that means he has to get the Aculos, a coveted fairy device, to pay his father’s ransom. He’ll have to infiltrate the advanced society of fairies with a dangerous plan that will put himself in conflict with the most powerful fairies.

There will be quite a few familiar faces in the movie. In addition to Shaw and Farrell, Judi Dench (Commander Root), Lara McDonnell (Holly Short), Josh Gad (Mulch Diggums), Tamara Smart (Juliet) and Nonzo Anozie (Domovoi Butler) also star. “Artemis Fowl” is directed and produced by Kenneth Branagh. Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay.

Readers have been waiting an awfully long time to see "Artemis Fowl" on any screen, big or small. The book series, published between 2001 and 2012, was optioned by Miramax before it even hit shelves, but the movie spent about 15 years in development before Disney finally got the rights.

Even with the Mouse House in charge, "Artemis Fowl" faced many delays. The movie was due out last year in August, but then it was pushed back to May 2020. Now, the global health crisis has pushed it to a streaming premiere.
