Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza) shocked “How to Get Away With Murder” fans when she confessed she had an abortion right off the bat of the first episode of Season 4.

However, towards the end, fans learned that it was just a lie. She has decided to keep the baby, but she doesn’t want her father to know about it. Souza told Deadline that there’s a very good reason for her character’s deceit.

“If she tells her father that she’s pregnant, her father is going to assume that Laurel is going to look out for more clues about the killer. Whereas if she makes it all go away in his mind, it buys time and also space to do some snooping around, without him being aware of it,” she said.

Laurel’s not contented to let Wes’ death be swept under the rug, even though her mentor, Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and the others seem fine to move on. Because of her constant “digging,” fans will learn why her father ordered the murder. At the same time, she going to get more people on her side.

“When [Laurel] tells Annalise she’s having the baby, I think Laurel is telling her, ‘we’re having it together,'” said Souza. “It’s going to be their redemption and it comes to her as such a blow when, despite that, Annalise fires her. That’s a big rejection for Laurel. However, she’ll take it as an engine to keep on with her plan [to uncover Wes’ killer], with or without Annalise… that will be her arc in at least these first eight episodes.”

Meanwhile, Davis told E! News that Wes’ death will have a “domino effect” in all of their lives, whether they like it or not. “It’s like that one block that you put on a finished piece that causes everything to fall down underneath it. That’s what you're going to see,” she said.

For Annalise, it might even be a positive effect. She’s a woman down on her luck, but executive producer Pete Nowalk already teased that Annalise will have a good redemption arc this season.

“She’s definitely been beaten down, and we’re going to watch her rise from the ashes, literally, of last season,” he told Variety.

“How to Get Away with Murder” returned for Season 4 on Sept. 28 at 10 p.m. EDT on ABC.
