A thief in India made it easier for the authorities to apprehend him by taking a meal break in the middle of a burglary.

The police in the northeastern state of Assam's capital city Guwahati nabbed the suspect Tuesday during a break-in when the man paused to prepare "khichdi," a quick dish made by cooking rice and lentils together, NDTV reported.

The Assam police took to their Twitter handle to detail the bizarre incident.

"The curious case of a cereal burglar!" deputies wrote in the description of the post. "Despite its many health benefits, turns out, cooking Khichdi during a burglary attempt can be injurious to your well-being."

"The burglar has been arrested and Guwahati Police is serving him some hot meals," officials wrote in the post.

Twitter users were clearly amused by the burglar's tomfoolery. "Hahaha....good one I think since morning he was in planning and execution mode and hence forgot to eat even a morsel," wrote one person.

"Moral of the story is cooking Khichidi is injurious to freedom," wrote another. One user even used a pun to mock the robber. "Shouldn't he be called a "cereal killer?" "This man will never eat khichdi again," said a person.

The homeowners were away when the man broke into the house, The Hindu reported. Neighbors, who were alerted by the noise of the cooking, got hold of him and handed him over to the cops.

In a similar incident that took place in September 2020, a burglar broke into a Georgia Taco Bell outlet, made himself a snack, and fell asleep. Surveillance footage inside the store showed the man finding his way into the outlet through the drive-thru window, and helping himself to a full-course meal, which he made using the fryers. The suspect then proceeded to take a three-hour nap, following which he fled the scene. Authorities were looking for the suspect, who was described as a Black man wearing black sweatpants, a black hooded sweatshirt, and black sneakers. The police had released pictures of the man as part of their efforts to find him.
