Facebook’s most popular services all went down for at least 30 minutes on Friday, with users unable to access Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Facebook itself. Other companies were unaffected, and the deluge of disconnected customers shot #instagramdown and similar hashtags to the top of Twitter’s trending lists.

Users attempting to surf the platforms or send messages were given connectivity error messages, such as Instagram’s “We're sorry, but something went wrong. Please try again.”

Facebook is yet to comment on the outage or give official numbers on how many people were affected.

The official WhatsApp Twitter account confirmed that it was a 45-minute outage but did not explain the cause. "Thanks for your patience, that was a long 45 minutes but we are back!" the verified account wrote.

Instagram also issued an official tweet that didn't reveal much but included an embarrassed dog gif.

In addition to outages in the U.S. and U.K., TechRadar confirmed connectivity complaints had spiked worldwide on the DownDetector monitoring service.

It’s not the first time Facebook’s ecosystem had gone dark. Like in previous iterations, users quickly pivoted to other social media sites, such as Twitter, to confirm their experience and joke around with fellow refugees.
