  • Pinkett Smith reportedly didn't want her husband to get in an altercation to defend her
  • The actress reportedly "will stand by" Smith amid the backlash to his actions

Jada Pinkett Smith doesn't think it was necessary for Will Smith to get physical in order to defend her at the Oscars but will stand by her husband amid the controversy.

On March 27, the "King Richard" star stormed the stage at the 94th Academy Awards and slapped presenter Chris Rock in the face over the comedian's joke about Pinkett Smith's shaved head.

An unnamed source told Us Weekly that Pinkett Smith is not "angry with" her husband over the incident, but she "wishes he didn't" hit Rock that night.

"It was in the heat of the moment and it was him overreacting. He knows that, she knows that. They're in agreement that he overreacted," the insider said of where the couple stands now.

According to the insider, Pinkett Smith didn't want the "Men in Black" star to get in an altercation to defend her because she didn't feel it was necessary.

"She's not one of these women that needs protecting. He didn't need to do what he did, she didn't need protecting. She's not a wallflower," the tipster continued. "She's a strong woman, an opinionated woman and she can fight her own battles. But she will stand by him."

The "Matrix Revolutions" actress and Smith, who share son Jaden, 23, and daughter Willow, 21, have weathered years of rumors and a number of controversies over their marriage of more than two decades, including her "entanglement" with August Alsina.

"They protect their family. They're all about their family and their kids. They've done everything to build this life for themselves," the source said. "They are very much protected in their own lives and do the absolute best they can to protect their loved ones."

During the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Rock was presenting the best documentary award when he made a joke about "G.I. Jane 2" directed toward Pinkett Smith. Her husband was initially seen laughing at the joke, but when Pinkett Smith rolled her eyes at the comment, Smith approached the stage and slapped the "Saturday Night Live" alum.

A video recorded by a member of the Oscars 2022 audience and later shared on TikTok appeared to show Pinkett Smith, whose face is not visible in the footage, laughing as her husband returned to his seat while Rock said, "Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s–t out of me."

A day after the incident, Smith issued a public apology to Rock via Instagram for his "unacceptable and inexcusable" behavior, explaining that the joke about his wife's "medical condition" was too much for him to bear.

The "Ali" actor also resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and said he would accept additional consequences the Academy's Board of Governors deems appropriate.

Pinkett Smith, who has been open about her hair loss and alopecia diagnosis, recently posted a quote about healing on Instagram, which read: "This is a season for healing and I'm here for it."

Last year, Pinkett Smith gushed about her husband's support amid her decision to shave her head.

"He loves it," she said on her show "Red Table Talk" in September 2021. "It was just time. I was just ready for that kind of expression and release. I'm so glad I did it. It was such a beautiful experience and such a freedom. I feel more connected to myself and to the great diving in a very special way. I was just like, 'I'm over it.' It was that moment. I was just like, 'I'm done. I’m just done with the worry. I’m done with the care. I’m just done.'"
