"Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn has revealed that he is working on a new project related to "Suicide Squad."

While appearing as a guest on Deadline's "Hero Nation" podcast Thursday, Gunn talked about his upcoming film "Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3" and discussed his plans with HBO Max for a second "Suicide Squad" spinoff. Without going into the details, he confirmed a TV show connected to the hit DC film is in development.

"We're working on something else now, another TV show that's connected to that universe," he said.

Gunn refused to elaborate about the "Suicide Squad" characters that would be featured in the show but said it would be connected to the universe.

"I don't think it will be the same genre as 'Peacemaker,'" he said. "It won't be as much a comedy as 'Peacemaker,' but it will be in the same universe."

"Suicide Squad" is a 2016 DC superhero film focusing on a secret government agency, run by Amanda Waller, that hires imprisoned supervillains so that they can carry out dangerous black-ops missions and save the world from a powerful threat. The film currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Gunn's comments about a second "Suicide Squad" spinoff series came after his latest project, "Peacemaker," became a huge hit on HBO Max. When asked whether the series would be renewed for another season, the director said the chances are "very good."

"There's a really good chance of a renewal," he said. "We're the biggest show in the world right now… The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we're excited, we all like doing it, we just need to cross some 'T's and dot some 'I's, which is basically me."

Gunn reportedly pitched to HBO Max the idea for another spinoff series built around one of the characters in "Suicide Squad" after "Peacemaker." While the project is still "in the embryonic stages with nothing written or greenlit," Deadline reported that the streaming platform was "high on it."
