Joe Biden and his family are still mourning the passing of his son, Beau Biden.

Beau, a former attorney general, succumbed to brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46 years old. The Bidens gathered together and remembered Beau on his sixth Memorial Day service anniversary at Veterans Memorial Park Sunday.

Biden, 78, and his wife, Jill, visited St. Joseph's church in Wilmington, Delaware, where they regularly attend Sunday service. The church also serves as Beau's burial site. The first couple was joined by their daughter, Ashley, and Beau's 15-year-old son, Hunter, who sat by his grandfather's side.

"As many of you know this is a hard day for us. Six years ago today, Hunter lost his dad and I lost my son," Biden was quoted by People as saying. "If he were here, he would be here as well paying his respects to all those who gave so much for our country."

"A lot of time passes, but you all know as well as I do that the moment that we celebrate it is the toughest day of the year. We're honored but it's a tough day. Brings back everything. So I can't thank you enough for your continued service to the country," he continued.

Biden concluded his speech with a moving message about losing a loved one and thanked those who were present at the annual memorial service.

"Your sons, your daughters, they live in your hearts and in their children as well. Thank you for allowing us to grieve together today," the president said.

Biden honored his late son, Beau, in an emotional speech a day before his inauguration. The POTUS was emotional when he mentioned that his only regret was not having his son at the time.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I only have one regret: He's not here," Biden said as quoted by Today. "Because we should be introducing him as president."

In an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" last year, Biden said that it was Beau who was supposed to be running for president.

"He was worried I would walk away," Biden said. "He is part of me, and so is my surviving son Hunter and (daughter) Ashley."
