John Legend talks about his friendship with Kanye West and reveals that they are not as close as before.

Legend and West shared a tight friendship. In fact, the “All of Me” singer performed at West and Kim Kardashian’s wedding in 2014. However, many were convinced that they had a falling-out due to their different perspectives about President Donald Trump.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Legend said that there was no rift between them. However, things have changed because they are now “in different places.”

“I don’t think we’re less friends because of the Trump thing,” Legend said.

“I just think we’re doing our own thing. He’s up in Wyoming [where West owns a $14 million ranch]. I’m here in L.A. We’ve both got growing families and I no longer have a formal business relationship with him as an artist, so I think it’s just part of the natural cycle of life.”

Chrissy Teigen’s husband also said that they never talked about politics. Instead, their interaction was almost always about music and creativity.

“He’s doing gospel music. That’s what he’s focused on right now, designing his clothes, so we’re in different places,” Legend added.

However in April 2018, West shared a personal text from Legend on Twitter asking him to re-align himself with Trump.

The “Love Me Now” singer and his wife are among the many celebrities who openly criticize Trump.

“So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, especially to people of color. Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation,” part of Legend’s text read.

The “Famous” rapper replied that he loved Legend but bringing up his fans and his legacy are only tactics based on fear to manipulate his thoughts. Later on, West explained why he shared Legend’s text on Twitter. According to him, he only wanted to show the world that there are people who disagree with him and voice their opinion. He respects their opinions but “I stand my ground,” he added.

In another tweet, he said he appreciated his dialogue with Legend and insisted that he was still the kid from the telethon. He also stressed that he understood that when people think of MAGA they don’t consider empathy.

Meanwhile, Legend responded by reminding West to think freely with empathy and context because his actions have consequences. He also joked about West leaking their personal text messages.

“And since you're posting texts, let me add that I have a new single out haha,” Legend wrote referring to his single “A Good Night” at the time.
