French actress Juliette Binoche, who has won international acclaim thanks to films such as The English Patient, Chocolat, Copie conforme, and Trois Couleurs: Bleu, turned 48 on Friday.

Binoche has had a long and fruitful career -- and has won multiple awards for her performances, including an Oscar (The English Patient), a César (Trois Couleurs: Bleu), and a BAFTA (The English Patient).

Binoche is also an activist, and has demonstrated and spoken in support of detained and imprisoned journalists and filmmakers, including U.S. journalist Jill Carroll and Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi.

Binoche has several films coming up, including Cosmopolis and La Créatrice.
