Fans of Johnny Depp took to social media after a U.K. court denied the American actor’s appeal in the libel case against a tabloid that labeled him a “wife-beater” when referencing his marriage to ex-wife Amber Heard.

“Justice For Johnny Depp” trended Thursday on Twitter after a judge rejected the 57-year-old’s appeal.

“We refuse Mr. Depp’s application to admit further evidence in support of his proposed appeal and we conclude that the appeal has no real prospect of success and that there is no other compelling reason for it to be heard. We accordingly refuse permission to appeal,” Lord Justice Underhill stated.

Depp was appealing the high court ruling from his 2020 trial in which Justice Nicol stated that the “wife-beater” label used to describe the famed actor in an article published by British tabloid The Sun was “substantially true,” the Guardian noted.

Depp was requesting permission to challenge the ruling and suggested Heard’s statement that she would donate her $7 million divorce settlement to a charity may have been a factor in the decision.

There were many on social media who shared their views with the hashtag "JusticeForJohnnyDepp."

“I’m just gonna say it. Johnny Depp’s appeal didn’t fail. The system has FAILED him and many others in this. #JusticeForJohnnyDepp,” one fan wrote.

Another user referenced a recording in which Deep suggested he and Heard should separate if their relationship turned violent, but Heard admitted she couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t strike him.

“The man who says there can be no physical violence is labeled ‘wife-beater.’ The woman who says she can’t promise not to get physical again is recognized as a victim. Justice? Equality? #JusticeForJohnnyDepp,” the user posted.

Heard’s representatives told Yahoo Entertainment that she was content with the decision.

“We are pleased — but by no means surprised — by the Court’s denial of Mr. Depp’s application for appeal. The evidence presented in the UK case was overwhelming and undeniable,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The legal matters are not over. In 2022, Depp is expected to face off with Heard in a $50 million defamation trial in Virginia.
