KEY POINTS

  • Kate Middleton used to be tense and anxious around Queen Elizabeth
  • The Duchess of Cambridge used to distance herself from Her Majesty
  • Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth's relationship has improved

Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth weren’t always close. In fact, when the Duchess of Cambridge first joined the royal family, it was evident that she was always anxious and tensed in the presence of the monarch.

While speaking with Express, body language expert Judi James explained the interaction and relationship of the Duchess of Cambridge and Her Majesty. She also shed some light on how their bond has improved over the years.

“Her first outings with the Queen showed some clear signals of anxiety and tension from Kate in between the smiles and moments of conversation, resulting in some rather rigid poses and tense facial expressions. Clearly keen to do everything right she sits and stands in a way that looks elegant but very self-conscious and the signature dimpled smile is missing,” James said.

When Middleton attended her first Trooping the Colour shortly after she and Prince William tied the knot, photos of her walking beside the Queen made headlines.

The snaps show the two female royals leaning on opposite directions, and they didn’t also communicate with one another. Instead, Prince William’s wife was photographed chatting with the other people in the balcony.

But over time, Middleton and the Queen have become quite close. In fact, the monarch has also been helping the former prepare for her future role as the queen of Britain.

“The body language signals between the Queen and Kate currently suggest a very relaxed, warm and relatively easy-going friendship with both women enjoying the other’s company. While the Queen always appears to affirm the fact that, despite her age, she is not in any need of support or aid, she often looks happiest when her granddaughter-in-law and future queen accompanies her or acts as co-host,” James said.

While speaking with OK! magazine, royal author Katie Nicholl said that it took Middleton and the Queen quite some time to get comfortable with each other. After all, both female royals are quite shy.

But at present, they have an easy relationship with each other because they have both exerted an effort to get along well.
