Kate Middleton had the last laugh despite the criticisms she received for her long wait for Prince William’s proposal.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge exchanged “I dos” in April 2011. However, unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who got married just two years after dating, Middleton waited for almost a decade for Prince William to propose.

Middleton’s critics dubbed her “Waity Katie” for sticking with her prince for that long to pop the big question. In the end, she got the last laugh because the future king eventually proposed to her.

According to Katie Nicholl in her 2011 book “The Making of a Royal Romance,” Middleton didn’t mind waiting for that long because she and Prince William made a “secret pact” that he would marry her after their second major breakup and three years before they announced their official engagement.

“I suppose what none of us knew was that [she] and William had actually made a secret pact to be married way back in 2007, after they got together after their second major break-up,” Nicholl wrote.

“So really, Kate had the last laugh, because she’s got her prince,” the royal biographer added.

Although Middleton had the last laugh, she didn’t like the “Waity Katie” nickname. Nicholl revealed that Middleton hated it and “absolutely despised” it.

Prince William was adamant about marrying Middleton because he saw how his parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage crumbled. The Duke of Cambridge vowed that he would not allow anyone to pressure him to rush to the altar just like his father.

The Prince of Wales was already in his 30s when he married Princess Diana. Prince Charles was reportedly pressured to marrying Princess Diana because she was the perfect “virginal” bride and he needed a queen.

Prince William took his time and only popped the question when he felt like doing so. Prince William realized that it’s time to propose to Middleton during their stay in rural Anglesey.

The couple had a blissful period in Wales where Middleton took over everything related to their home and was “patiently supporting him as she quietly worked and made the most of her non-royal status.”

The future king popped the question to Middleton during their trip to Kenya. However, Prince William confessed that he had been carrying Princess Diana’s engagement ring for weeks before he got the guts to ask Middleton, adding that he was terrified of losing it.
