Some of the beauty and fashion rules that the royal family has to follow are well-known, like sporting neutral nail polishes and having hemlines of a certain length, However, there are other lesser-known rules that Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are expected to follow as well.

According to Express UK, one lesser-known rule is one that is not official, but a preference of Queen Elizabeth, and requires the royal women not to use exaggerated amounts of face makeup—and Harper’s Bazaar clarified that it meant contouring of the face is rarely done as a result. In addition, the eyes must not look overdone either—even at weddings.

“Even though you might see her add a smoky eye or an extra lick of mascara for a night-time event, Catherine rarely does ‘heavy’ makeup,” Harper’s said. “Between her medium-coverage foundation and light makeup, the Duchess usually keeps things simple.”

However, when it comes to lips, royal women can apply a large amount of makeup—though the preference is for muted tones.

Royal hair rules are also in place, with an unspoken rule that locks should be kept tame and natural—though the Duchess of Sussex is known for her signature messy bun that she has sported on numerous occasions in the past, though she has notably been keeping her hair down at appearances since she returned from maternity leave.

“It would be an understatement to say that the ‘messy ballerina bun’ is virtually non-existent in the royal world,” Mahalia Chang, Vogue digital fashion editor said. “Between the Queen’s carefully coifed hair, Kate Middleton’s signature everyday blow-out and Duchess Camilla’s poised flicks, royal hair is generally very put together.”

In order for the royal women to keep their hair in great condition, hair spray is also considered an essential tool in their arsenal.
