Their 2001 wedding was a fairytale affair and was steeped with several royal traditions. However, Kate Middleton and Prince William still took steps to try and make their own mark by breaking protocol in one area on their big day.

In the book “Kate: A Biography,” royal author Marcia Moody revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did find a way to bend some of the traditional rules during their private reception, which saw them offering a buffet-style meal, rather than a formal affair.

“The Queen hosted the formal art of the reception for 650 guests, which broke with tradition and was in the form of a buffet,” Moody wrote (via Express UK).

The buffet, which was held in 19 state rooms of Buckingham Palace featured a selection of different canapes before the couple cut their cake. The options included Cornish crab and lemon blini and rhubarb crème brûlée tartlets.

Hosting a buffet was reportedly a break from the usual tradition, which featured a sit-down breakfast meal, versus something more relaxed.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the couple did break the rules in their relationship either, as they also went against tradition when they lived together prior to news of their engagement.

While Prince William completed his stint in the military, Middleton lives with him in a rented cottage at RAF Valley in Anglesey—something that thoroughly broke with the royal tradition of years past.

“In a breach of royal protocol that showed just how modern their courtship was, he and Kate were living together in a rented cottage close to William’s base,” author Katie Nicholl said. “Kate taking on, and enjoying life as an ‘RAF wife.’ During the days, as William trained, Kate filled her time taking photographs, one of her hobbies, and working for her parents’ party-planning family firm on an ad-hoc basis.”
