King Edward VIII was forced to not abdicate by an important figure in his life decades ago.

In the unearthed letters that were kept secret for 60 years, it was revealed that Queen Mary urged her eldest son to not give up the throne for love. Late author James Pope-Hennessy had the chance to talk to King Edward, and the latter showed him letters handwritten by Queen Mary.

“He seized one of the two 1936 files and showed me various letters – until we reached one from Queen Mary, begging him not to broadcast (his abdication speech). ‘Surely you might spare yourself this strain and emotion,’ he read out loud,” Pope-Hennessy said.

According to the author, a look disgust crept on King Edward’s face at that time. King Edward couldn’t believe that Queen Mary asked him not to abdicate and said that he doesn’t know what would’ve happened if he followed her orders.

“We began to talk about the abdication. ‘People can say what they like for it or against it, I don’t care,’” he said.

King Edward was convinced that he acted on good faith and was upset over the fact that he was treated shabbily. The former King gave up his throne to King George VI so he could marry the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. According to the author, the other members of the royal family didn’t also wang King Edward to abdicate.

In related news, King Edward wasn’t the only member of the royal family that got a divorce. According to Reader’s Digest, there are 11 other royals that suffered the same fate. King Henry VIII dissolved his marriage to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. King George III’s eldest son, the Prince of Wales, divorced Princess Caroline of Brunswick.

Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, Princess Margaret, also got a divorce from Antony Armstrong-Jones. Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter, got a divorce from Captain Mark Phillips. Prince Charles and Princess Diana also got a divorce in 1996. In the same year, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson also got a divorce.

Camilla Parker Bowles also divorced her ex-husband years before marrying Prince Charles. Meghan Markle is also an American divorcee.
