The current smartphone trend right now are bigger displays and slimmer bezels. However, ZTE is planning on something more innovative with its foldable smartphone that’s currently codenamed as Axon Multy.

The Axon Multy, which could launch as the Axon M, features dual Full HD 1080p displays, which can fold out into a single 6.8-inch display, according to Android Authority. When the Axon M is folded out, the 6.8-inch display will have a screen resolution of 1,920 x 2,160. When its folded, the device will look and function like a regular smartphone.

Android Authority published two photos of the ZTE Axon M showing off its dual displays. It appears as though the device comes with a hinge system that looks pretty similar to what’s typically seen on laptops. The smartphone comes with a sleek design that appears to be built with glass and metal.

The demand for smartphones with bigger screens have increased, while demand for tablets have already declined. ZTE’s Axon M may just be the device that bridges the gap between the two.

Android Authority’s source claims that the ZTE Axon M is designed for a more convenient multitasking experience. Each of the displays will be able to show two apps at the same time, which is a multitasking feature that’s more similar to PC than what’s already available on smartphones.

Tablets are often being marketed as a more portable replacement for PC and laptops. Tablets can offer up PC-like multitasking, but current smartphones are still incapable of that. Phone manufacturers have made smartphone displays taller recent and it allowed two apps to run simultaneously. The problem here is that when two apps are open at the same time, each app is cropped down in order to fit on the screen.

With the Axon M, it seems as though ZTE has found a solution to this problem. Since the Axon M will have two full-sized displays, two apps can run at the same time without compromising screen real estate. It might be too early to call it, but it looks like the Axon M has the potential to replace both laptops and tablets if this is truly the case.

As for internal specs, the ZTE Axon M is said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, according to Phone Arena. The Snapdragon 820 was the chipset of choice for most of last year’s flagships. It’s likely it won’t be able to keep up with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the LG V30, which are being powered by the newer and more powerful Snapdragon 835. The ZTE Axon M is also said to come equipped with a 3,120mAh battery.

ZTE will be having a press conference on Oct. 17 in New York City and it’s likely that the Axon M foldable smartphone might be announced at the event. The device will allegedly be an AT&T exclusive in the US and will be priced at $650, according to Android Central.
