“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 2, episode 9 synopsis reveals why Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) will try to capture Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) in 1967 Los Angeles. The CW

Although Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) is the former leader of the Legends, it isn’t the main reason why the Legion of Doom tries to capture him in Season 2, Episode 9 of “Legends of Tomorrow.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “Raiders of the Lost Art,” Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) travel to 1967 Los Angeles to get the Spear of Destiny from Rip. While Rip possesses the incredibly powerful artifact that can rewrite reality, the former captain of Waverider may have probably no idea what the spear is capable of. The synopsis reveals that Rip has no memories of his past due to “time drift,” which means that he doesn’t know that he’s actually a time master.

In addition to trying to convince Rip of who he actually was prior to becoming a graduate film student, the Legends are also going to fix a huge time aberration that is created when the Legion of Doom tries to capture Rip.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the time aberration in the episode is that George Lucas (Matt Angel) quits film school.

Guggenheim said that Lucas’ career shift is going to deeply affect Ray (Brandon Routh) and Nate (Nick Zano), as both Legends are avid fans of the filmmaker’s works. “As a result [of Lucas’ decision to quit film school], he never makes ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’ As a result, Ray, who became an engineer because of ‘Star Wars,’ and Nate, who became a historian because of ‘Raiders,’ slowly start to lose their brilliance, because those things that inspired them to become who they are didn’t exist.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Rory (Dominic Purcell) asks Stein (Victor Garber) for help and makes him promise to keep it a secret from the team. Does this have something to do with the visions of Leonard (Wentworth Miller) that Rory keeps seeing? Only time will tell.

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 2, Episode 9 airs on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
