A 51-year-old man climbed in through the window of a Mississippi house and stabbed a woman while five children were asleep. Investigators are on the lookout for the suspect after he fled the scene leaving the woman in critical condition at the Marion County residence.

The incident took place at around 1 a.m. Wednesday on New Hope Road, according to WLBT. The suspect, identified as Johnny Lee Nichols of Moss Point, is accused of letting himself into the house by climbing through the woman's bedroom window.

The unidentified 34-year-old victim and five juveniles were reportedly asleep in the house at the time. Nichols stabbed the victim multiple times and then escaped in a vehicle.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene at 1:19 a.m. after receiving the report of a stabbing. The woman was found with multiple stab wounds and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators believe the stabbing was spurred by a domestic-related issue, CBS 42 reported.

"Nichols was known by the victim and the incident is domestic related. Nichols entered the residence through a window while the victim and five juveniles were asleep. Nichols entered the victim's bedroom, where he stabbed the victim multiple times," the sheriff's office said in a statement posted on Facebook.

"Nichols fled the scene in a white Ford Crown Victoria or Mercury Grand Marquise. Nichols is wanted by the Marion County Sheriff's Office for Attempted Murder," the statement continued.

Officials from the sheriff's office urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to Nichols' arrest.

Nichols was described as having black hair and brown eyes with a height of 5'2 and a weight of 145 lbs.

Another stabbing incident was reported this month after a 41-year-old man walked into this mother's home in Atlanta, Georgia, and attacked two people who were visiting her at the time. Ashley Hackett, 35, and Lavon Draine, 70, were rushed to the hospital after they were found at the scene with stab wounds. The suspect, Romes Biffle, had left his mother's house following the stabbing and was later arrested from his own home.
