A man in Kenya was taken into custody for fatally stabbing his wife. He was found living with her body inside their home for five days.

The incident came to light Monday evening after neighbors noticed a foul smell emanating from the residence and broke open the door. They found the victim, identified as 35-year-old Virginia Khavakali, dead inside the home. Her decomposed body had multiple stab wounds and was partially burnt, The Standard reported.

Meanwhile, the accused, 46-year-old Wycliffe Khamasi, was lying unconscious near her body. The police said the man had consumed a lot of alcohol after killing his wife, and had blacked out. He was taken to a local hospital following which he was transported to the police station. The incident took place in Kakamega County.

Initial investigation revealed the man killed his wife during an argument five days ago. The neighbors had last seen the woman on April 19, Opera News reported.

Neighbors and family members told local media their marriage was marred with domestic violence and that the accused used to assault his wife often.

"There was a time he cut off her fingers following a domestic dispute," a neighbor told The Standard.

Khamasi’s sister, Penina Khatunyi, too confirmed the incident, and said, "After he cut off her fingers a few months ago, I warned my brother against assaulting his wife. I’m now shocked to learn he has killed her."

The accused remained in prison as of Tuesday, and the police said he will be arraigned once the investigation is over. Meanwhile, the woman’s body was taken to the hospital for an autopsy.

Last week, a grade five boy in Kenya stabbed his father to death after being chided for fighting with his baby sister. The man was making dinner at their home when the boy stabbed him multiple times on his back with a kitchen knife before fleeing. The victim’s wife rushed him to a local hospital where he succumbed to injuries the following morning. Investigators found a bloodied kitchen knife at the residence, and were looking for the boy as of Sunday.
