A man who suffered serious brain injury in a car accident six years ago loses memory every six hours and also ends up forgetting people and places completely if he doesn’t keep notes of them.

In a documentary named ‘Living without Memory,’ Daniel Schmidt said he found from his notes that he was going to meet his sister when the accident took place six years ago, India Times reported.

"I was on the motorway. There was a traffic jam and I was the last one to join it. I was sitting there and then a car came up behind me, it was a big seven-seater with a young family inside, and the driver didn't see the traffic jam at all," he said.

"He smashed into me at over 80mph. The entire motorway was closed. There were a lot of injuries, but they weren't too serious. I was airlifted to the hospital. I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury - they call it a level three TBI," he added.

Following the accident, Schmidt underwent physiotherapy and speech therapy to get back to his old life. However, his memory is still not how it used to be prior to the accident. He still forgets things every six hours. If he doesn’t keep notes of people he met or places he visited, they would disappear completely from his memory, Times Now News reported.

Schmidt revealed in the documentary that the accident had a huge impact on his personal life. He split up with his former girlfriend and also lost most friends as he couldn’t remember any of them. He recalled meeting his then-partner, Katharina, and telling her that they had to get in touch by the third day or he would forget her forever.

"I'd need to get in touch by the third day at the latest. I'd need to hear her voice or we'd need to talk, and above all, see each other. Otherwise, it would be like meeting her for the first time," he said.

The two had a baby boy and he doesn’t remember the child growing up.

"I can't remember my son's birth, and that's really horrible," he said.
