  • An X-ray revealed a mobile phone in his stomach
  • The object had blocked his intestinal passage
  • It was removed through a two-hour surgery

In a bizarre incident, the doctors treating a man in Egypt were shocked to find a mobile phone inside his stomach.

The man, who had complained of severe abdominal pain, reportedly swallowed the mobile phone some six months ago. The incident came to light after the patient, whose identity has been concealed, approached the Aswan University Hospital with severe stomach pain and an inability to eat, reported WION News.

Doctors suggested tests and an X-ray, which revealed a mobile phone in his stomach. The object had been causing severe inflammation in his stomach and intestines. He was unable to eat as the mobile phone was blocking the intestinal passage.

The shocked hospital staff questioned the man, who confessed to swallowing the object. He told the doctors he ingested it six months ago, and was too embarrassed to tell anyone. He decided to wait because he figured the object would come out of his body through a natural process.

However, his condition began to deteriorate, leaving him unable to eat. It was unclear as to why he swallowed the object and whether he was suffering from any mental health issues.

The man was then rushed to the operation theater where, after a two-hour-long surgery, the doctors retrieved the phone.

"The incident was the first of its kind. It was really bizarre, as the man did not reveal why he swallowed the mobile phone," Dr. Mohammed Al Dahshouri, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Aswan University, was quoted by Gulf News.

Doctors said the patient was now in a stable condition and was being provided with the necessary care. The patient was also informed about how the device had posed a threat to his life due to the battery containing harmful chemicals.

A similar incident happened in Kosovo, a partially recognized state in southeastern Europe, wherein a man swallowed an entire Nokia 3310 handset. Luckily for the man, his doctors were able to remove the device, which was lodged in his stomach, through an operation. The 33-year-old man had a small phone in his stomach for four days. "With endoscopic roads, so without cutting the stomach, we pulled the split phone into three parts. No complications," the doctor who treated him said.
