Academics are accusing Meghan Markle of dropping her feminist views for a conservative and upper-class makeover.

Prior to joining the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex was very open in supporting women’s rights. She was very vocal in campaigning for a change in the society. However, this has changed following her royal wedding to Prince Harry.

Laura Clancy and Hannah Yelin from Celebrity Studies evaluated Markle’s activities before and after her royal wedding. According to them, Markle’s activist voice has been muted.

"Markle's activist voice has been either silenced or appropriated by the monarchy: she has quit her acting career, closed down her popular blog and social media accounts for all her online activity to be ciphered through Kensington Palace," they said (via Daily Mail).

Markle is also believed to be receiving duchess lessons from the Queen’s advisers, so she can live her life with the protocols and expectations in the royal family. The pair is convinced that Markle has reversed the good works she previously did after joining the Firm to conform to the royals’ conservative ways.

They believed that Markle is in a good position to mask or deflect attention from the royals’ problematic relationship. “What is at stake here is much more than the representations of one woman and the meanings contained therein; it is the meaning of feminism itself,” they added.

The pair’s observation is not new to some royal experts. On “Robert Jobson’s Royal Podcast,” the royal correspondent revealed that Markle was muted by the royals because she had to censor her opinions due to her new role in the royal family.

Prior to joining the royal family, Markle was also very open about her political views. However, as a royal, she is not allowed to vote, hold any type of public office or support a political party.

“Such strident opinions would have to be muted as she embraces her life as a member of the royal family,” Jobson explained.

Meghan Markle was aware that she had to undergo a number of major changes in her life prior to marrying Prince Harry. One of the changes she embraced well has something to do with her fashion choices.

Markle just wore a plain button-down white shirt and ripped jeans when she and Prince Harry were seen publicly for the first time in Invictus Games. However, she dressed like Kate Middleton when she made her first royal debut at Prince Charles’ Garden party after marrying Prince Harry.
