Meghan Markle will be in big trouble if she makes this mistake on Christmas.

The royal family will be spending the holidays together. Every year they exchange gag gifts. According to Sunday Express editor and columnist Martin Townsend, the Duchess of Sussex will be in big trouble if she fails to follow the Queen’s strict rules.

"They have present giving and they are not allowed to give serious presents.," Townsend told Nine Network.

"Any suggestion that Meghan will give away cashmere jumpers or anything like that – if she makes that mistake she’s in big trouble," he added.

Townsend added that royals are only allowed to give comic little presents. Queen Elizabeth II has three strict rules during the special gathering. Aside from giving cheap and funny gifts, they have to wait for Prince Philip’s permission before they open the presents. The last one: The cheaper the present, the better.

When Princess Diana joined the royal family for the said occasion for the first time, she broke the royal protocol after giving Princess Anne a cashmere sweater. Princess Diana didn’t get a memo about giving silly gifts, but she made up for it the following year. The People’s Princess recovered by giving Sarah Ferguson a leopard-print bath mat.

Kate Middleton was also anxious when she joined this royal tradition for the first time. According to her, she didn’t know what to give to the Queen, so she opted to cook her granny’s recipe of chutney. She was worried how Her Majesty would take it but was delighted to find it on the table the next day.

Middleton eventually learned the rule of exchanging gifts with the royals. One time, she gave her brother-in-law Prince Harry a "Grow a Girlfriend" kit. This happened before the Duke of Sussex met and dated Markle.

Unlike the late Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Cambridge, Markle learned the drill fast. When she joined the royals Christmas festivities last year, she gave the monarch a singing hamster toy. Queen Elizabeth II was reportedly very pleased with it that she was in hysterics. Unfortunately, the toy didn’t last long as one of her corgis destroyed it.
