Their announcement they were stepping back from their roles as senior royals has caused a frenzy around the world, but sources claim that looking to see who is behind Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s overall decision need to look no further than the Duchess of Sussex.

“Meghan is definitely leading the charge on this,” a source told Us Weekly, stating that unlike her husband, she has far less ties to the royals, the British people or the Palace.

A second source also stated that it was clear the Duchess was behind the decision based on where the couple plans to now spend half their time, announcing they would be splitting their year up between the UK and North America. According to that source, they would also be splitting that time in North America up as well.

“They’re planning to split their time between Canada and L.A.,” the source said. “They already have a home setting in Canada. That will be their base. They are house-hunting in L.A., but L.A. will be more of a holiday home. Meghan’s definitely behind the move.”

Of course, if Markle is the one who spearheaded the idea, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to those following the royal couple’s every move, since she admitted in the October documentary “Harry and Meghan: An African Journey,” that she was warned prior to marrying Harry that the British tabloids would virtually consume her and that she was struggling to adapt to life as a royal.

“I’ve said for a long time to H—that's what I call him—it's not enough to just survive something. That’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive. You’ve got to feel happy,” she told Tom Bradby in the film. “I think I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried. I really tried. But I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.”

In fact, her struggles were reportedly so well-documented, that while Queen Elizabeth II is allegedly devastated by her grandson stepping back from his duties, she isn’t so much blindsided by the decision as she was by when the announcement was made—which may have also been out of the couple’s hands.

According to a separate source, while the couple has received criticism for dropping the announcement early (and one day before Kate Middleton’s birthday), a report about the decision was allegedly about to run in The Sun newspaper, and they tried to proactively beat it—something they still didn’t manage to do.

“It was the paper’s front page, hours before the official announcement, so Harry and Meghan technically didn’t beat them to it,” a source told Us Weekly.

As for what the future holds for them and the rest of the royal family following their decision to step back, the family is still working out details.
