Michelle Obama has revealed the time her husband Barack Obama did an “ugly loud cry” and opened up about their daughters, Malia and Sasha.

The former first lady opened up about her family and daughters in a new interview with Oprah Winfrey live at the Barclays Center in New York City on Feb. 8. The ex-FLOTUS shared that the former president did “that ugly loud cry” whenever he got emotional about their daughters Sasha and Malia growing up.

“We bawl like babies,” Michelle told Winfrey, People reported.

Michelle added that Barack hid his tears using sunglasses at Malia’s graduation and he was getting emotional when they dropped off their youngest daughter Sasha at college last year. Michelle confessed that they held back their tears because they did not want to embarrass their daughter.

“When the emotions come is when we are getting in our cars and getting on a plane and leaving our babies,” the former first lady said. “They’re going somewhere where they now live. That’s when it hits you. It’s like we all start choking up.”

Michelle revealed that she doesn’t follow her daughters on social media, so she doesn’t have to keep tabs on them now that they are living on their own as college students. Also, at this point, she lets Sasha and Malia find their own grooves as young adults and she lets them make their own decisions.

When it comes to giving her daughters advice, she encourages them to be their own person. Michelle doesn’t want Sasha and Malia to live their lives the way the world expects them to be.

“What I tell them is what I continue to tell themselves is that they have to walk their own walk,” Michelle said.

“They cannot define themselves by looking at each other or looking at me or their dad. They have to take the time to get to know themselves — give themselves a moment to figure out who they want to be in the world, not who they think I want them to be, not what the rest of the world says about them, but to really think about how they want to shape their lives and how they want to move in this world. So, I don’t want them measuring themselves by external influences, and for young girls that is hard to do.”

Michelle also joked about becoming an empty nester. The former FLOTUS said that she was restless when her daughters were with them because she would always check on them. She recalled how it took her energy and added, “And they’re gone, thank God.”
