Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams is finally opening up about her struggles with depression since she was a teenager.

While speaking with “The Talk” (via People), the 37-year-old singer admitted to being suicidal at the height of her career with the popular girl group. “I’m in one of the top-selling female groups of all time, suffering with depression. When I disclosed it to our manager at that time, bless his heart, he was like, ‘You all just signed a multi-million dollar deal. You’re about to go on tour. What do you have to be depressed about?’” she recounted.

At that time, Destiny’s Child was being managed by Beyoncé’s dad, Matthew Knowles. After not being taken seriously by Knowles, Williams thought that maybe she was just tired from everything that’s been happening in her life at that time. However, her depression continued to the point that she wanted to get out of the group and take her own life.

“I was at that place where it got so dark and heavy because sometimes you feel like, ‘I’m the provider, I take care of people. I’m not supposed to be feeling this way. What do I do?’ And I wanted out,” she said.

Williams also revealed that she suffered from the mental illness at the age of 13. But it was only when she turned 30 that she realized what was going on.

“I think at the age of 25, had I had a name to what I was feeling at that time, I would have disclosed that ‘I’ve been suffering from depression. I didn’t know until I was in my 30s what was going on. I just thought it was growing pains. I just thought, ‘I’m turning into a woman.’ I’ve been suffering since the ages between 13 and 15. At that age, I didn’t know what to call it,” she said.

After her interview on CBS’ “The Talk” aired on Wednesday, Williams took her thoughts to Twitter and thanked the network “for being a safe place” to talk about her struggles. The award-winning singer also reminded everyone to reach out for help whenever they feel it is necessary.
