A Michigan woman was shocked when an email originally sent to her spam folder informed her that she was the winner of a $3 million Mega Millions prize from the Michigan Lottery.

The 55-year-old from Oakland County, Laura Spears, was looking for a non-lottery related email in her spam folder when she discovered the email with the winning information, Michigan Lottery Connect reported on Friday.

“I saw an ad on Facebook that the Mega Millions jackpot was getting pretty high, so I got on my account and bought a ticket,” Spears said in an interview.

“A few days later, I was looking for a missing email from someone, so I checked the spam folder in my email account. That’s when I saw an email from the Lottery saying I had won a prize,” she added.

The winning numbers were “02-05-30-46-61” on Dec. 31, 2021. The drawings won Spears a $1 million prize, which tripled due to the “Megaplier.” She purchased her ticket online through MichiganLottery.com.

“I couldn’t believe what I was reading, so I logged in to my Lottery account to confirm the message in the email. It’s all still so shocking to me that I really won $3 million!” Spears said.

Spears plans to spend the lottery winnings on her family and her early retirement. She also said that she has now added Michigan Lottery to her "safe senders list," so that she doesn't miss out on any similar fortune in the future.
