The body of a woman, who had been missing for two months, was found stuffed in a sack in a drain after she was allegedly murdered by her lover, police said.

The victim, identified as Renu, went missing in Karnal, a city in the northern Indian state of Haryana, on Sept. 19. The 38-year-old social health activist was last seen when she left for work on her vehicle from her home. When she didn't return home, her family filed a police complaint, news outlet India Today reported.

The investigators found her vehicle a week after she went missing.

During the investigation, cops found out that Renu, who was married, got into an affair with a man, identified as Ravindra. The duo was in an extra-marital relationship for over 4 years.

Around eight months back, the duo had an altercation over some issues, after which Ravindra wanted to end the relationship. However, Renu opposed his idea. After Renu went missing, the family raised suspicion against Ravindra.

Cops took Ravindra into custody, and during interrogation, he confessed to the murder. The suspect also reportedly told the cops the spot where he dumped Renu's dead body.

Police further recovered the victim's remains stuffed inside a sack in a drain. Ravindra was detained on charges of murder, reports said.

Meanwhile, officials sent the victim's body for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death. The victim's family alleged that there could be more people involved with the murder and demanded a fair investigation, according to Hindustan Times.

Other details into the matter were not revealed by the authorities.

Earlier this week, an Indian man murdered his lover after she refused to leave her husband and later killed himself by jumping in front of a moving train. The man, identified as Kiran Debnath from the Indian state of West Bengal was reportedly in a relationship with a married woman named Rhea Biswas. The duo got into an argument after Biswas refused to leave her husband. In a fit of rage, Debnath slashed the woman's throat. After the murder, Debnath live-streamed a video on social media and confessed to the crime.
