Nashville Javery
Juliette and Avery are finally back together in “Nashville” Season 5, episode 4. CMT

“Nashville” Season 5 has new writers and a new network, but Juliette Barnes is still the same. The starlet can’t walk after her plane crash, and she is determined to get better. However, she seems to think that ignoring her doctors’ advice and pushing Avery away are her best options. In episode 4, she had to realize that healing isn’t something she can speed up.

Juliette’s Healing: Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) wants to get better faster. Despite her physical therapist Allyson’s (Jen Richards) advice, she decides that she wants to try a harness that would help her learn to walk again. It’s typically for patients who are further along in the healing process, but Juliette doesn’t care. She calls the medical director.

Juliette isn’t listening to any of her doctors anymore. She canceled her psych appointment and she tosses a pain pill instead of taking it.

When she is put into the apparatus, Juliette freaks out. She has flashbacks to the crash. She sees the plane wreckage and starts having a panic attack. Allyson tells her that her mind and soul need to heal too.

Pushing Avery Away: It isn’t just her doctors that she is frustrated with in episode 4, though. Juliette falls while trying to go to the bathroom. She yells at Avery (Jonathan Jackson) when he tries to help her. He goes to get her a pill, and he realizes that she isn’t taking them. The former addict would rather be in pain than become dependent on drugs again.

She hates her estranged husband helping her. She says he does it because he feels obligated, and Avery gets angry. He says she is pushing him away, but this isn’t anything new. Juliette has never wanted to rely on anyone else.

After her fight with Avery, Juliette goes to church. The pastor tells her that God is listening no matter what. She takes a minute alone to ask for help understanding the accident. “Why me and not the other people on that plane? It’s not because I’m a good person. I don’t understand,” she says.

Later, Juliette tells Avery that she needs him. “I’m just so scared you’re going to feel like I’m this burden,” she admits. Avery says it’s okay. He’s happy to take care of her and the baby. He kisses her, and Juliette is ready to move their relationship quickly. She pulls him on top of her, but Avery moves away.

Juliette jumps to conclusions and assumes he can’t be attracted to her while she is hurt. Avery says she’s “the most beautiful woman in the world,” but he needs to move slowly. They went through a painful divorce last year.

“I don’t think you have any idea how much I love you, but I just…” Avery says.

“You need time,” Juliette says.

Apparently, he doesn’t need much time. A little while later, he comes back and carries her into the bedroom. It looks like the long separated couple is finally back together.

Will Starts Lying: Will (Chris Carmack) doesn’t seem as excited about moving in together as Kevin (Kyle Dean Massey) is. He seems distant and even skips telling Kevin about the show he played last night. Kevin has to go to work, so Will sees an apartment without his boyfriend. He meets a very flirty realtor, and for no apparent reason at all, Will doesn’t like the fancy pad.

Afterwards, Kevin comes to the house looking for him, and Will tries to get Gunnar (Sam Palladio) to lie and say he isn’t around. His phone gives him away, though. Will can’t say why he doesn’t like the apartment. He just blames his sour mood on a headache.

Later, Will tells Avery that he didn’t want to take the apartment because he didn’t want to be tempted by the flirty realtor. He’s been tempted a lot lately, actually. Avery thinks Will just has a fear of missing out, and that’s very different from actually cheating. However, Avery promises that moving in together will not make things easier.

Later, Will claims that he filled out an application for the apartment. Kevin discovers he is lying, however, when he finds the application in the trash. The apartment is already gone. Will finally admits that he doesn’t want to move in with his boyfriend.

Kevin says that he always felt like Will wasn’t ready for a real relationship. He knows this is about more than the apartment. Will apologizes and he goes on stage that night to perform a song that he says is about his “first love.”

Rayna’s New Partner: Rayna realizes she can’t afford to hire a big name director for The Exes’ music video. Conveniently, tech billionaire Zach Welles (Cameron Scoggins) is coming to Nashville to see Rayna. He has a great offer for her. He wants to invest in Highway 65. Before the deal is even signed, Zach helps get a director for The Exes’ music video.

Zach would own 20% of the company, and they could pretty easily dissolve the deal and go their separate ways if it doesn’t work out. She assumes the deal will have tons of red tape, but it doesn’t. Her lawyer says that this is as close to free money as possible. Rayna signs the deal.

Deacon (Charles Esten) gets weird vibes from Zach, but Rayna is excited about the idea of having money for her business. Deacon is way more creeped out when Rayna discovers a letter from her stalker. The envelope comes complete with rose petals and no return address. The envelope doesn’t have any postage either. Whoever sent it hand delivered it to their house.

Bucky (David Alford) says that they can beef up their home security, but it likely isn’t anything to worry about. Rayna has had overzealous fans send her weird stuff before, particularly when she was at the height of her career.

“Nashville” Season 5 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on CMT.
